APIS: International Medical Coordination for Proton and Carbon Ion Therapy

International Coordination for Proton and Carbon-Ion Therapy in Korea

APIS supports communication with Korean hospitals and coordinates the case review process for selected international patients.

When Patients Seek International Review

Patients and families may seek international review when treatment is delayed, unavailable, financially out of reach, or clinically complex.

Treatment Timing
Insurance or authorization barriers may delay treatment.

Cost and Coverage
High out-of-pocket costs or limited coverage may lead patients to compare financially feasible treatment options.

Limited Local Options
Specialized treatment may not be available or accessible locally.

Complex Cancer Situations
Recurrent, resistant, inoperable, or re-irradiation cases may require review by a specialized center.

Particle Therapy in Korea

In Korea, proton therapy and carbon-ion therapy are available at a limited number of cancer centers. Each case requires hospital review to determine whether particle therapy is clinically appropriate.

Proton Therapy
Proton therapy delivers radiation to a defined tumor depth while reducing dose beyond the target. It is considered when limiting radiation exposure to nearby normal tissues is particularly important, including pediatric tumors, brain and spine tumors, head and neck cancers, liver cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and re-irradiation cases.

Carbon-Ion Therapy
Carbon-ion therapy uses particles that are heavier than protons and produce a greater biological effect within the tumor. Hospitals review carbon-ion therapy for recurrent, resistant, or inoperable tumors, particularly when tumor location, prior radiation, or nearby critical organs make treatment planning difficult.

Clinical indications differ by center, and each hospital determines eligibility after reviewing the individual case.

What APIS Coordinates

APIS assist with communication and coordination with Korean hospitals for international case.

Medical Records
APIS identifies the records and imaging required for hospital review and coordinates their submission.

Hospital Communication
APIS contacts relevant hospital departments to confirm whether the case can be reviewed and what additional information is required.

Consultation and Appointments
When the hospital agrees to proceed, APIS coordinates consultation schedules and related communication.

What APIS Does Not Decide

Clinical decisions remain with the treating hospitals and physicians.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Hospitals determine the diagnosis, treatment indication, treatment method, and treatment priority.

Eligibility and Case Acceptance
Each hospital determines whether the patient is eligible for proton therapy, carbon-ion therapy, surgery, systemic therapy, or another treatment, and whether it will accept the case.
