International Coordination for Proton and Carbon-Ion Therapy in Korea
APIS supports communication with Korean hospitals and coordinates the case review process for selected international patients.
When Patients Seek International Review
Some patients and families look for additional review when local treatment access is delayed, unavailable, denied, or clinically limited.
Treatment Delay
Insurance or authorization barriers may affect treatment timing.
Limited Local Options
Some cases require review of specialized treatment options.
Complex Cancer Situations
Recurrent, resistant, inoperable, or re-irradiation cases may need multidisciplinary review.
Particle Therapy in Korea
In Korea, proton therapy and carbon-ion therapy are available at selected major cancer centers. Hospital review is required to determine whether a case may be appropriate.
Proton Therapy
Proton therapy uses proton beams to deliver radiation to the tumor while reducing unnecessary radiation exposure beyond the target area. It may be considered when protecting nearby normal organs is clinically important, including selected pediatric tumors, brain and spine tumors, head and neck cancers, liver cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and re-irradiation cases.
Carbon-Ion Therapy
Carbon-ion therapy uses carbon ions, which are heavier than protons, and may offer a stronger biological effect in selected tumors. It may be considered for complex cancers, including recurrent, resistant, or inoperable tumors, especially when prior radiation, tumor location, or nearby critical organs make treatment planning more challenging.

What APIS Coordinates
APIS may assist with communication and coordination with Korean hospitals for selected international case review requests.
Medical Record Guidance
APIS may guide patients and families on the medical records commonly required for hospital review.
Hospital Communication
APIS may communicate with relevant hospital departments regarding review availability and administrative process.
Appointment Coordination
When a hospital review proceeds, APIS may help coordinate consultation schedules and related communication.
Travel-Related Coordination
APIS may assist with general travel-related coordination after hospital acceptance or review direction is clarified.
What APIS Does Not Decide
APIS does not make medical decisions, determine treatment eligibility, or guarantee hospital acceptance.
Medical Judgment
Diagnosis, treatment indication, treatment method, and treatment priority are determined by hospitals and physicians.
Treatment Eligibility
Whether proton therapy, carbon-ion therapy, surgery, systemic therapy, or other treatment is appropriate depends on hospital review.
Travel Fitness
Whether a patient can safely travel for treatment must be assessed by the treating physicians and relevant medical professionals.
Cost and Insurance Decisions
Hospital costs, insurance coverage, reimbursement, and payment decisions are not determined by APIS.
