APIS: International Medical Coordination for Proton and Carbon Ion Therapy

When Insurance Denial Changes the Treatment Timeline

An insurance denial can delay treatment when additional documentation, an appeal, or peer-to-peer review is required.

After a denial, patients should clarify:

  • What exactly was denied, and why?
  • Can the decision be appealed?
  • Is a peer-to-peer review or external review available?
  • How long is the review expected to take?
  • Could the delay affect the treatment plan or eligibility?

An appeal challenges the insurer’s decision. At the same time, the treating physician should assess how long treatment can safely wait.

When the review process is uncertain, another hospital review can begin in parallel so that an alternative treatment pathway is not considered only after the appeal has failed.

APIS coordinates communication with Korean hospitals for international case review.
